Hitting the shelves back in August of this year, What the Yuck?: The Freaky and Fabulous Truth About Your Body has made quite an impression with women readers of all ages. This light, yet very informative book addresses all those highly embarrassing questions that you are afraid to ask your doctor or even ask your best friend.
What the Yuck?: The Freaky and Fabulous Truth About Your Body is a collaboration of Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa (otherwise know as Dr. Raj) and Lisa Lomardi, who both contribute extensively to Health.com. Dr. Raj, a Havard graduate and Lisa, a Yale graduate put their smarts and health expertise together to create this amazingly non-traditional resource for women who may be a bit shy when comes to talking about their bodies and any type of unusual symptoms that they may be experiencing.
Geared mainly towards women, Dr. Raj answers over 205 questions, all of which were asked by real women, not just by experts in the health community. So you know for sure that the book will include some bizarre questions and some questions you would never dare to ask! Here are a few teaser questions that are both asked and answered in the book:
- “Can too many venti lattes (Green Tea latte made with Soy) give you a heart attack?”
- “Why do I get a headache when I eat chocolate cupcakes?”
- “’Is it bad that I drank margaritas before I realized I was pregnant?”
Dr. Raj shares with readers some really interesting tidbits of information too. One reviewer of the book said she used those fun facts to jump start her girls night out and everyone couldn’t believe some of these facts and that these questions made for a fun-filled evening between the girls. Here are some tidbits, which Dr. Raj shared:
- “Though few of us test the limits of our fertility anymore, our bodies are still capable of amazing things, like having 19 kids.”
- “Most women have one breast that’s larger than the other.”
Finally, Dr. Raj addresses some everyday health concerns and topics, which include H1N1 (the Swine flu), cell phone dangers, and famous celebrity diets.
What the Yuck?: The Freaky and Fabulous Truth About Your Body is a 265 page-turner, which is organized by hilarious themes such as “That Time of the Month” and “Between the Sheets”. It is available for purchase at Amazon.com for around 14.00 for the paperback version and Borders has a hardcover version for about $20.00. As I previously recommended with other reviews, visit your local library to see if there is a copy available for you to check out. But based on the reviews, it sounds like this one is a must have and maybe having your own copy is the way to go. Here is just what one person said about this unique read:
“Dr. Raj is very skilled at writing to the lay person. The language is easy to understand and even the technical medical terms are well explained. Because of this, I didn’t feel confused reading some medical jargon that I don’t come across every day.”
Many reviewers agreed that What the Yuck?: The Freaky and Fabulous Truth About Your Body is refreshing with its light reading style and candid answers from Dr. Raj. The way the material is presented is not only humorous, but very enlightening as well. With its short informative paragraphs, it makes the book easy to read and keeps you wanting to turn those pages!
If after reading What the Yuck?: The Freaky and Fabulous Truth About Your Body, some of your own questions are not answered or if you and a few friends have some more inquisitive questions about your bodies, you can go to Health.com and ask Dr. Raj yourself. There are even a few “Yuck” questions on the website with their corresponding “Yuck” answers. What would you want to ask?
