The Importance of Whey Protein Supplements – They Aren’t Just a Fad

There are a ton of sports supplements that claim to do great things but whey protein supplements are definitely something that all athletes and bodybuilders should use on a daily basis. Well, everyone needs protein in their diets, but those who are regularly physically active should be sure they are getting enough. They are in no way, shape or form any kind of fad. The body needs whey protein so that the muscles can repair and rebuild themselves.

What is Whey Protein?

Whey protein is actually a by-product of cheese. It actually comes from milk, but is made during the process of turning milk into cheese. Sounds de-lish right? Ha ha. Whey protein is sold in powder form, sometimes flavored, sometimes flavorless as a protein supplement. It can easily be added to liquids such as milk, water or juice depending on the flavor. The powder can also be added to certain foods, such as muffins, pancakes, soups, puddings…basically anything and the taste won’t be detected. This is a great way to get more protein from foods that don’t come by it naturally.

How Much Whey Protein is Needed?

There are conflicting reports on this, but overall I have found the most common answer to be 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. So, if you are 150 pounds, you should be taking in 150 to 225 grams of protein per day. This is easier for some people, and not so much for others. A great way to get the added protein is through whey protein supplements. Taking a protein shake once or twice a day can add as much as 24 grams or more in just one sitting.
